MetroLink Project Director Update - 25 June 2024

MetroLink Project Director Update - 25 June 2024

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) is pleased to announce the appointment of the MetroLink Project Director to lead the largest infrastructure project in the history of the State.

Dr Sean Sweeney has been appointed to the role following an extensive national and international recruitment competition, carried out on behalf of TII by Newsom Consulting.

With over 30 years’ experience in the delivery of large-scale construction projects, Sean is known for his collaborative and engaging style of leadership.

The former Chief Executive Officer of City Rail Link in Auckland, New Zealand, he was responsible for the development and delivery of New Zealand’s first metro line.

A recognised expert in the procurement and delivery of large capital projects, Sean studied engineering at Wellington Polytechnic and Auckland University and later gained a Doctorate in Construction Economics from Melbourne University. He worked in the infrastructure industry overseas before returning to New Zealand in 2018 to lead City Rail Link Ltd, a transformative underground rail link in Auckland’s city centre and New Zealand’s biggest-ever transport infrastructure project.

His appointment to lead the MetroLink team comes as the project faces into a number of critical milestones including the potential granting of a railway order and Government consideration of Decision Gate Two, which if granted, will sanction the start of the procurement for the main infrastructure contracts.

As the new MetroLink Project Director, Sean will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of this programme, which aims to provide a new high-frequency, environmentally friendly public transport service for Dublin.

Through its connectivity with mainline rail, Dart, Luas and BusConnects, MetroLink will transform public transportation in Ireland, addressing critical issues such as congestion, accessibility and sustainable growth and providing a frequent, reliable and sustainable public transport system.

Welcoming the appointment, Transport Infrastructure Ireland CEO Peter Walsh said:

“I am very pleased to welcome the appointment of Sean Sweeney to the position of Project Director for the MetroLink project. The appointment followed an extensive national and international recruitment competition, carried out on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) by Newsom Consulting.

Of his appointment, Sean Sweeney said:

"My late father was born and raised in Castlebar, Co. Mayo. He would be thrilled and immensely proud, as I am, to know his son was going back to lead this major project for Dublin. MetroLink is a once-in-a-generation project that will transform the public transport system in the capital city and I am delighted and honoured to have been selected to spearhead its delivery."
